Many little snags and problems can be fixed quite easily – you don’t need to always call a tradesman. For example, a wobbly toilet seat usually just requires the wing-nuts on the underside to be tightened up by hand! As a rough rule of thumb, if the issue does not require tools other than perhaps a single screwdriver, and if you’re not dismantling anything to gain access to parts, then you might be able to fix it yourself. The following PDF gives you more guidance.

Help with heating problems
Problems with radiator valves
If a radiator is not working then it may simply be turned off at the valve. The video below explains the main types of radiator valves.
Has your boiler suddenly stopped working completely?
Check the power is on to the boiler – usually a boiler will at least have a power light, and more modern boilers have some kind of digital display. Assuming you have power, then the most common problem by far is the boiling tripping out due to low pressure in the system. The video below explains more. Please note: if you don’t have a combi boiler (and you have a hot water cylinder in your home) then this video probably does not apply.
Please note -we’re not responsible for this video – it’s an appropriate video we found on YouTube but it’s not our content. You could also try searching for a video for your make of boiler.
The heating seems to work, but I can't control it from the programmer.
All homes are different and there are several configurations for heating and hot water systems depending on the type and size of home you have. It’s quite normal for a home to have no programmer at all – or no programmer but there is a wall thermostat – a programmer might be installed which is also a thermostat – of there may even be multiple programmers and thermostats. It can get quite confusing. However, programmers and thermostats are actually just switches (a bit like a light switch) however, the thing that operates the switch to off or on, is either a programmed time, or a temperature level. If your heating can’t be controlled then check the settings in your programmer or thermostat. If you have a wireless programmer then your batteries may be getting low:
Radiators are cold at the top but warm at the bottom
This usually means that air is trapped in your radiators and they may need bleeding. But be careful! If you bleed your radiators then be ready to absorb any escaping water in an a rag or old towel. But REALLY importantly: bleeding the radiators may de-pressurise your central heating and cause the boiler to cut out. Follow the guidance in the video below.
Radiators are hot at the top but cold at the bottom
This usually means that the radiator has sediment/sludge in the bottom. This a more involved snag requiring a plumber to remove the radiator and drain. Report a snag to us via the reporting forms above – don’t try and resolve this yourself.
